Akany Avoko

Madagascar

Many homeless children roam the streets in Madagascar. Either they are orphans, or their parents are simply too poor to take care of them. They depend on begging and petty crime. For the past forty years, children's home Akany Avoko has offered shelter for girls in Madagascar, who would otherwise have ended up in jail. Return to Sender supports Akany Avoko.

Children that end up in Akany Avoko at a young age are given regular education. However, This is difficult for older girls that are taken in, as they are already far behind. For this reason they are taught practical skills, such as sewing, embroidery, cooking and screen printing, in addition to the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic.

Return to Sender contributes to making the screen printing workshop more professional. This provides the older girls with opportunities to develop their skills and at the same time offers the children's home an additional way of generating own income. Last year, the organisation managed to buy IT equipment, furniture, electrical equipment and an additional printing mould for the workshop. This has not only increased the sales of t-shirts, bags and other articles, but also improved the motivation of the girls that work there.
