Mayaschool Foundation

Guatemala

The Maya are still disadvantaged in Guatemala. There is an independent Maya school in El Tablon that draws children from all around Lake Atitlán. Return to Sender contributes to setting up education in biology, physics and chemistry at this school. This will give the students with opportunities to prepare for medical professions.

The Maya school in El Tablon has a very low drop-out rate. As the school is independent of government funds, it is free to set a curriculum with room for the children's own language (Kaqchikel), Maya mathematics and traditional crafts, like weaving. Moreover, the students are allowed to wear traditional clothing.

With help from Return to Sender, the school has now converted one classroom into a laboratory, and the teachers have been trained to use the equipment in class. The first lessons for students started in January 2010.
