Tharu Dauw

Nepal

Return to Sender supports women entrepreneurs in the Tharu community of the Chitwan region in south Nepal. These women work in the crafts sector and operate from home as self-employed producers. In order to improve their production and to be able to generate income for more women, joint accommodation is currently being built for them. The foundations have already been laid.

The products made by the Tharu women reflect their local art and culture, which is in danger of disappearing. The flower pattern on the pillow sold in the HEMA collection, for instance, is derived from the paintings on houses during the Lakshmi festival. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of prosperity and fertility. The Tharu women decorate their houses with these spotted flowers to improve their chances of the goddess visiting them.
